One city, two stories
The theater maker Enkidu Khaled was born in Baghdad in 1985 during the war between Iraq and Iran. He became a filmmaker. The camera protected him from the madness of violence. In 2007, he fled his city. Writer and journalist Chris Keulemans grew up in 1960s Baghdad through his father’s work. He deciphered cuneiform writing in the world’s oldest library, learned to swim at the fancy Al-Wijah Club and roamed around with neighborhood Bedouin children.
Keulemans and Khaled share their native soil, yet there is a world of difference.
Last year they both returned to Baghdad for the first time and came back with a reverse Sheherazade: as long as the killer keeps telling, the listener stays alive.
Documentary theater
In this documentary theater performance, the two men exchange images: both of shootings and kidnappings in the chaotic Baghdad of 2005 and of an idyllic Easter Sunday in 1967 on the green lawn in front of the Anglican church. While narrating, they offer two completely different perspectives on a city that is gradually bleeding out.
Can a memory remain beautiful?
Are they telling the truth? Are their memories intact or poisoned by the harsh horror? Baghdad is about boys chasing butterflies and men killing, about the lights along the banks of the Tigris and an insane kidnap in today’s Baghdad, about pain and paradise.

Een stad, twee verhalen
Theatermaker Enkidu Khaled werd in 1985 in Bagdad geboren tijdens de oorlog tussen Irak en Iran. Hij werd cineast. De camera beschermde hem tegen de waanzin van het geweld. In 2007 ontvluchtte hij zijn stad. Schrijver en journalist Chris Keulemans groeide door het werk van zijn vader op in het Bagdad van de jaren zestig. Hij ontcijferde het spijkerschrift in de oudste bibliotheek ter wereld, leerde zwemmen op de sjieke Al-Wijah Club en zwierf rond met bedoeïenkinderen uit de buurt.
Keulemans en Khaled delen hun geboortegrond, maar toch is er een wereld van verschil.
Vorig jaar keerden ze allebei voor het eerst terug naar Bagdad en kwamen terug met een omgekeerde Sheherazade: zolang de moordenaar blijft vertellen, blijft de luisteraar in leven.
Documentair theater
In deze documentaire theatervoorstelling wisselen de twee mannen beelden uit: zowel van schietpartijen en ontvoeringen in het chaotische Bagdad van 2005 als van een idyllische Paaszondag in 1967 op het groene gazon voor de Anglicaanse kerk. Al vertellend bieden ze twee totaal verschillende perspectieven op een stad die gaandeweg leegbloedt.
Kan een herinnering mooi blijven?
Vertellen ze de waarheid? Zijn hun herinneringen intact of vergiftigd door de harde gruwel? Bagdad gaat over jongens die op vlinders jagen en mannen die moorden, over de lichten langs de oevers van de Tigris en een krankzinnige kidnap in het Bagdad van vandaag, over pijn en het paradijs.
